SUMMARY:Snorkeling Adventures around Vancouver Island with Sara Ellison
DESCRIPTION:Although BC is a well-known scuba diving location\, it is less appreciated that the vast majority of these species can be found in the intertidal and shallow sub-tidal zones that are accessible to snorkellers. In this talk\, Sara will share her adventures and experiences\, explaining the gear you need\, the kinds of critters you will see and her personal top picks for places to go to see our wondrous wildlife. \nBy trade\, Sara Ellison is an astrophysicist. After earning her PhD from the University of Cambridge\, she spent 3 years doing astronomy research at the European Southern Observatory in Chile\, before moving to the University of Victoria to take up a Canada Research Chair in 2003. Sara is an international leader in the field of galaxy evolution\, with numerous honours and awards to her name\, including the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics from the Royal Society of Canada. She is also a keen athlete and world traveller\, but having snorkelled all around the world\, BC is her favourite place to go for a swim! In 2023\, Sara published Snorkelling Adventures Around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands: The Ultimate Guide\, which was a #1 bestseller on the BC booklist. \nVirtual Attendance possible – email info@naturenanaimo.ca

SUMMARY:Unlocking the Mysteries of the Black Swift
DESCRIPTION:Hello NALT Members and Supporters\, \nOn Thursday\, April 17th\, 7 pm at the Beban Park Social Centre\, room #2\, join our friends from Nature Nanaimo for a presentation on Unlocking the Mysteries of the Black Swift with Paul Levesque and Christine Rock (See attached poster). \nThe presentation will describe the natural history of the Endangered Black Swift in Canada and recent findings from Paul and Christine’s work on the species. Presenters will unpack why the species is described by some birders as “the coolest bird” and why the species account in The Birds of British Columbia (Campbell et al. 1990) ends with the following note: “The breeding distribution and biology of the Black Swift in British Columbia remain for determined and careful observers to reveal”. \nWildlife Biologists\, Paul Levesque and Christine Rock have worked alongside one another on several projects over the years. Together they co-founded WildResearch\, with a mission to build\, train\, and educate a community that contributes to conservation science. While serving on the Executive Board they ran the Iona Island Bird Observatory and organized pelagic birding trip fundraisers from Ucluelet\, BC. They were each awarded the BC Nature Club Service Award for their contributions to WildResearch. They have both worked in many exciting birding locations across BC (Triangle Island and Haida Gwaii to name a few)\, and in remote areas of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Most recently\, their focus has been on advancing our understanding of the Black Swift.

SUMMARY:Bat Conservation on Vancouver Island: The importance of wetlands\, protected areas and forest cover.
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Nature Nanaimo\, NALT is very happy to present Bat Conservation on Vancouver Island: the Importance of Wetlands\, Protected Areas and Forest Cover\, a talk by Scott Wilson\, a Research Scientists With Environment and Climate Change Canada. This free presentation is on Thursday\, February 20th at 7 pm at the Beban Park Social Centre\, Room 2. \nThis presentation will start with an overview of the importance of bats and the threats they face and then discuss the results of a three-year study of bat occurrence and ecology on east Vancouver Island conducted in collaboration with NALT. This study addressed several topics that will be discussed in the presentation including the relative abundance of species in the study region\, how bat activity differs among local habitats such as wetlands and meadows\, whether activity is higher in protected areas and how much forest cover they prefer in the surrounding landscape. \nScott Wilson is a Research Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on the ecology and conservation of species at risk with an emphasis on bats and Neotropical migratory birds. His work on these topics includes studies in coastal British Columbia\, prairie Canada\, Colombia and Mexico.
